For the Catholic family that wants to fly the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus over their home, their porch, or their parish procession especially in June which is the month dedicated to Jesus’ Sacred Heart. What the Sacred Heart of Jesus Flag Means The Sacred Heart of Jesus flag is a traditional Catholic banner depicting the wounded Heart of Christ pierced by a lance, encircled by a crown of thorns, surmounted by the Cross, and burning with the flames of His love. Catholics fly it as a public profession of faith, especially during June, the month traditionally consecrated to the Most Sacred Heart, and as an act of reparation for the sins committed against that Heart. That last word matters. The flag is not decoration. It is reparation. It says, by being visible, what the Heart of Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in the 17th century: Behold this Heart which has so loved men. The History of the Sacred Heart Flag (Carillon Sacré Coeur) From the 1758 Battle of Carillon to the Vendée The Sacred Heart has been carried into the world on cloth for at least four centuries. The most famous example is the Carillon Sacré Coeur, the white-cross-on-blue banner with the Sacred Heart at its center, flown by the French Canadians at the 1758 Battle of Carillon. Vastly outnumbered, they routed a British force roughly four times their size. The miracle of Carillon belongs to the Sacred Heart; the flag has carried that memory ever since. Three decades later, in the Vendée, French Catholic peasants stitched the Sacred Heart onto their tunics and standards as they rose up against the de-Christianizing French Revolution. They lost the war. They never abandoned the Heart. Quebec, Ireland, and the Traditional Catholic Revival The Carillon flag was the unofficial standard of French Canadian Catholics until the 1950s. In Ireland, the Sacred Heart still hangs in countless homes as enthronement vs just art. Today the traditional Catholic revival, in the U.S. and abroad, is rediscovering all of it: the Heart, the flag, the public profession of faith. Our flag is part of that. Why Fly the Sacred Heart Flag in June June is consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Every Friday is consecrated to His Passion. The entire octave of Corpus Christi falls in June. And the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus — the highest feast in the devotion’s whole liturgical life — comes in early June. There is no month in the Catholic year that more belongs to this Heart. Fly it then. Fly it on the Feast. Fly it through the octave. Fly it longer if you wish. The Sacred Heart of Jesus flag is a traditional Catholic banner depicting the wounded Heart of Christ pierced by a lance, encircled by a crown of thorns, surmounted by the Cross, and burning with the flames of His love. Catholics fly it as a public profession of faith, especially during June, the month traditionally consecrated to the Most Sacred Heart, and as an act of reparation for the sins committed against that Heart. When is the Feast of the Sacred Heart? The Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a moveable feast which lands on the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 12 June. Because the entire month of June is consecrated to the Sacred Heart in the traditional Catholic calendar, the flag is properly flown for the whole month, not only on the feast day. What is the Carillon Sacré Coeur? The Carillon Sacré Coeur is the historical Sacred Heart flag carried by French Canadians at the 1758 Battle of Carillon, where they defeated a much larger British force. It became the unofficial standard of French Canadian Catholics until the 1950s. We make a separate flag in that specific Carillon design; the flag on this page is our own monthly devotional design for June. Can I fly the Sacred Heart flag year-round? Yes. The Sacred Heart of Jesus flag is appropriate any day of the liturgical year. Many Catholic families fly it permanently as a public sign of consecration to the Sacred Heart. We recommend the 300D heavyweight fabric if it will be flown outdoors continuously. It is also advised to take it down in storms and high winds to preserve the stitching and grommets. What’s the difference between the 100D and 300D fabric? 100D is our standard polyester, bright color, suitable for porch and indoor use, and for outdoor use that isn’t constant. 300D is a heavier, more durable polyester that holds up to year-round outdoor flying. Both use the same dye sublimation print and the same 2-grommet finish. Christus Vincit! Browse the full monthly Catholic flag series, twelve flags for the twelve devotions of the Catholic year.
